Commemorating the tenth anniversary of the Michael A. Sant Memorial Lecture

The History Teachers Association in collaboration with the Faculty of Education of the University of Malta will this year be commemorating the tenth anniversary of the Michael A. Sant Memorial Lecture. This annual event was launched in 2002 in memory of Michael A. Sant (1934-1999), pioneer of modern history teaching in Malta. Along these ten years various history pedagogy experts have been invited to Malta to present the latest findings and research on the subject. This year Comm. Dr George Cassar, President, and Prof. Yosanne Vella, Vice-President of the History Teachers Association and academic members of the University of Malta will be giving a joint paper entitled ‘A hundred years of history teaching and learning in Malta’. During the evening a ‘History Option promotion clip’ will also be projected and introduced by Adrian Zahra, PRO and Webmaster of the HTA.

As was done in the fifth year of the Lectures, the HTA in collaboration with the Faculty of Education will this year launch another book with lectures 6 to 10. This publication entitled History teaching & learning: bridging the theory / practice divide (vol. 2), will be available during the event for those who wish to purchase a copy.

The event will take place on 19 October 2011 at the National Curriculum Centre, Farsons Street, Hamrun, and those attending are asked to be seated by 5.45 p.m.

The HTA General Assembly held on the 20th of June 2011 reconfirmed the HTA committee.

Annual General Meeting 2011

On Monday 20th June, the History Teacher’s Association will be organising its Annual General Meeting for its members. The meeting will be held at 13.00 at the Faculty of Education board room, Room 326, Old Humanities Building, University of Malta.

Those members who would like to contest the election for the committee should fill in the form and send it by Saturday 18th June. Contacts are found in the form.

Anyone who would like to attend and is not a member can fill in the membership form and bring it on the day together with € 5.

History Option Promotion Clip

Adrian Zahra (PRO HTA) together with the HTA has released a promotion clip to be shown to Form 2 students who are at the stage of deciding which subjects to take at Form 3. The clip is divided into three sections. In the first part students are shown that studying History does not entail studying of names and dates by heart, as many students believe, but it is the study of a living subject. In the second part the clip highlights parts of the syllabus of the History SEC and the resources used to study history at SEC level. The third part defies the mentality that taking history as an option does not present career opportunities in the future, by offering a vast list of job opportunities that are made possible by studying history.

It is recommended that this promotion clip is not shown to students only, but also to the students’ parents. This is because it is often the parents who are hesitant from allowing their children to choose History as an option.
